This course explores principles of rhetoric and stresses effective expository writing. Primarily English 101 is a course in organization of ideas and development of these ideas through use of specific information. We also deal with matters of style, sentence structure, paragraph development, punctuation and vocabulary. Students are introduced to close reading of appropriate materials. By placement. To be taken prior to higher-numbered courses.

A writing intensive course with frequent written assignments (essays, journal responses, other modes of writing, including creative, narrative, persuasive, and expository), this course explores principles of composition for a variety of academic writing purposes, focusing on effective rhetorical and persuasive expository writing. It is designed to develop the organization of ideas, close reading analysis, and critical thinking, preparing students for the type of academic thinking and writing necessary for success in a variety of academic disciplines. Students are introduced to close reading and analysis through selected texts and frequent written assignments.
