Throughout the year, this class will focus on analyzing world literature, both classic and contemporary, and craft corresponding thematic essays. In addition, we will read and respond to numerous non-fiction articles incorporating reading and writing strategies/standards found within the common core. These strategies include elements of rhetorical analysis, argument, narrative, and expository essay writing to strengthen reading, writing, and critical thinking skills for utilization throughout your secondary and post-secondary education.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Examine the elements of fiction and non-fiction utilizing various sources
  • Compose journal responses demonstrating close analytical skills
  • Engage in lively yet respectful scholarly debate via digital tools
  • Understand the use and benefit of annotation skills as an active participant in reading
  • Identify the central issues as well as the overall meaning of a work 
  • Improve writing skills when responding to literature and non-fiction texts 
  • Develop persuasive writing skills including counterarguments
  • Enhance test-taking skills within a timed exam
